Nischele Patel is now a Final Nominee for the British Asian Sports Awards sponsored by Sony Entertainment TV Asia. Her category is the under 18’s Female. The footage is being aired everyday all day on 805 Virgin Media or 782 Sky Box in between programmes. This is now being televised all over the world in over 100 countries.

Nischele is a 2nd Dan Black Belt in WTF Taekwondo. She achieved 1st Dan at the age of 11 and 2nd Dan at the age of 13. She has been competing Nationally since the age of 9 but practising Taekwondo since the age of 5. She became British National Champion seeded number 1 for the 2006/2007 in the Cadet – 37kg category which was held in Loughborough in November 2006. Other achievements in 2007 were:

Charity Tournament, January 2007, Croydon – GOLD

British National Championships, December 2007, Manchester – BRONZE

Nischele is a 14 year old National fighter seeded number 3 in the UK in the 14-17 age range in the -42kg category. Nischele continues her TKD training after school and at weekends. Her training even include teaching to younger children or lower belts than herself.

Her family are very proud to see an Indian girl competing at National tournaments, as this is not the done thing and that many Asian families are quite taken back to see this. Nischele is the Indian girl representing the community.

The fact that Nischele is very dedicated to Taekwondo, she also happens to be a Grade A student at school, a pianist, and an RAF Cadet.

There is a voting phone line to vote for Nischele on 09011597818 or text BASA NISCHELE 83222. Any help would be very much appreciated. Phone line closes on the 15th Feb at 11.59pm.

There is no real effective defense against a knife – unless you’re lucky or the knife in question is plastic. And there is always as much chance that the weapon carrier will become the victim. Why carry it in the first place?

The appeal of parkour — or the “art of displacement”, in which the participant uses his/her entire body to avoid obstacles — has spread fast and wide since its beginnings in France. The fusion of extreme sports, martial arts and a cheeky, no-guts-no-glory approach has found the freeform style an all-embracing audience. Join Urban Freeflow’s Staying Alive workshop and further develop your skills and technical ability as a traceur — one trained in parkour — and before you know it, you’ll be speed-vaulting and palm-spinning with the finesse of a pro.

a really interesting article in today’s observer on the issue of whether exercise does in fact help weight loss.

“We all know exercise helps you lose weight. But does it? There is almost no scientific evidence to support the orthodoxy. Indeed, it could even do the exact opposite… Gary Taubes weighs up the facts and takes a controversial look at why the gym is not going to fix it.”
